An "easier" way to get some more troops is getting trading high enough (125 iirc) and then take the workshop perk. at least with 1.72 its easy to have some profitable workshops, so you get like 3-4 renown everyday for free. that helps you to rank up and grab the +15 men per rank.
Check the city market and see which resources they have tons of like grain or flax, etc. Then if for example the city always has lots of grain a brewery is a good choice (which uses grain to produce beer). If you want to know which type of workshop uses what resource try selecting them when you're buying one from a workshop worker.
Kill every raider in the area of your workshop and then attack their camps when only one troop remains in the den. after a month or so of no raiders in the area you will improvement in denars. One final thing, bring in basic goods (Grain/Fish/Iron Ore - anything cheap to buy) to the city of your workshop/caravans.
There is a mod called VARTS Trade Guild which indexes all that information (village production and where the resources are actually going etc) and "advises" you on which workshops are the best to get (++ strength), if you follow it you are most certain to get at least 100-300 dinars per workshop.
